Intervals - woot!

I thought I wasn't going to want to get out and run today.  The forecast was calling for 36F and rain.  It wasn't much bettre than that, but it was acceptable.  It was 38F, windy (10-20mph) and 90% humidity.  Although, I think it might have been even more humid.  The air was thick.  It may not have been raining, but water was at least condensing out of the air, because I was getting misted.  The wind alternately fogged my glasses and unfogged them.  How annoying!  At least I was on striaght sidewalks!

In the end, I went 2.94 miles in 32:23.  Not horrible.  Better than my recent runs.  That makes for a 11:01/mile pace.

As usual, I was reluctant to get out, but I'm glad I did.

A long fun run

This morning was the coldest yet. It was about 27.5F (-2.5C) when I started and only warmed up one degree by an hour later. There was basically no wind (except the 5mph "wind" always hitting my face.) I set out for an hour long run with the treat of a cup of coffee at a local cafe waiting for me at the end.

It was good that it was still dark when I left because my running getup was supremely dorky. I couldn't find my long exercise pants, so I had slightly cropped ones over my silk thermal tights. I wore my long sleeve technical running hoodie and over that, my rain coat/windbreaker jacket with the armpit zippers open. I also had thin gloves on and a stocking cap. It really worked well, but I'm pretty positive the staff at the coffee house had a good laugh once I left. That's ok. The last 30 minutes the sun had come up, but by then, I was in the zone and didn't care what I looked like. I was feeling so good.

It was one of those runs that just felt darn good. At first, it was a bit cold and I struggled a bit to adjust my lungs to the cold air, but once I warmed up, the cold air didn't bother me. I changed up my route so that I would end near the cafe. I'm getting really good at estimating that. I reached the sidewalk across the street (where I wanted to end) at one hour and 23 seconds. Well, then I jogged across the street to avoid a car, but that doesn't count.

I love to let my mind wander while my feet just carry me along to the music. I can see why some people record their thoughts during their runs. I always think I have interesting things to say during my runs, but by the time I get around to blogging, the thoughts are gone.

I ran to 154bpm Definitive and then finished with 156 Running to Elysium from Podrunner. I should really check if there are more podcasts out in those bpm ranges! If these were tapes, the sound would be distorted by now. That's ok. I don't get tired of them.

In 1:00:23 I ran 5.29miles for a pace of 11:25 min/mile. The last half of my run was mostly at 170bpm, but the average for the whole run was 164bpm.

Bunny count: 21!

Hilly loops

Today I decided to do hilly loops around my neighborhood. Normally, I just roam around, turning where I feel like at the moment. Often I choose the flattest route. But, today, I decided to do three loops near my house. My road is a gradual incline of about 1/4 mile. The next street over, however, is much steeper. The steeper part is shorter, of course, and then any incline is more gradual than my street. So, I ran downhill from my house and ran up the steeper hill on the next street. The whole loop was 0.95 miles, which is a pretty nice, even number! Who woulda known?!

From top to bottom, the elevation change is only 162ft (49.7 meters) so it's not that big of a deal. But it's enough of a challenge for 5am in 39degF weather with 5mph wind. Actually, the weather was perfect. The coldness was just right. I could feel my lungs wheezing a tiny bit, but nothing to worry about yet. I wore about the same gear as last time. It was a bit on the warm side, I think. Not too bad, though.

I listened to a 156bpm Podrunner podcast called Running to Elysium. There is a line somewhere around 20-25 minute in that repeats "You don't stop" over and over again. That always makes me pick up my pace!

Overall, I did 3.04 miles in 31:05 for a pace of 10:13min/mile. That's pretty good for me!

No bunnies, but I saw a stray cat! I forgot to mention I saw one bunny during my last run. I'm sure you were wondering...

Post-Christmas run and a temporary puppy

Although I didn't get my run in on Christmas day, I did go for 3 miles (with a 0.1 mile walk break) on the day after Christmas! I got up early to run before we loaded up the car and headed out to visit relatives for a few days.

While at my Grandmother's place, my husband and I went for a run. It was rather cold (30F, -1C), but we went out anyway. After we got about a 1/2 mile down the road, a big puppy decided running with us would be fun. Despite our yelling at him and various other methods of getting rid of him, he stayed with us for the remainder of our run. We were going to take a path across a four lane highway, but decided to stay on a side road so the dog wouldn't try to cross the road. Despite our good intentions, the stupid dog still ran out onto the highway, making a couple cars slam on their brakes. So, we lured him off of the highway and started running back to where we think he lives. After he went off to play with another dog, we started walking slowly back to my grandmother's house. We thought we had gotten rid of them, but then we heard the pitter patter of paws again.

It was a really cute dog, maybe half german shepherd and half husky. Very friendly. I couldn't convince Claus to take him home, though. :) The dog stuck around my grandmother's house for a few hours. Her little poodle (half the puppy's size) chased it off a couple of times, but the invisible fence limited her reach. Anyway, an interesting and short run.

Glad I joined a gym!

The weather lately has definitely justified my decision to join a gym this winter. The temperatures have been in the single digits to negative (Fahrenheit) and with the 30+mph winds, the windchills have been very negative, in the minus twenties Fahrenheit. Brrrr!!! There is absolutely no way I'd be running outside right now. In fact, it would be very dangerous.

But, even with the noise making weird sounds on the building, the gym is warm and inviting in this weather. I made it 4 miles last night then did a full round of weights.

It wasn't one of those "wow" run days. So, I added some walking breaks like this:
0.15 miles walking warm up (3.5mph-4.5mph)
1.5 miles running (5.2mph-5.3mph)
0.1 miles walking (~4.5mph)
1.5 miles running (5.0mph - 5.2mph)
0.1 miles walking (~4.5mph)
1.0 miles running (5.0mph - 5.2mph)
cool down walking
all at 1% incline.

I didn't stretch after the run, and I think I can tell today. Of course, the feeling could also be from the combination of the long (for me) run combined with the weighted lunges I did afterward. My knees don't hurt today, but they have a feeling that tells me "Don't mess with me!" So, I won't. A day of rest should take care of things.

Running cold

I wimped out yesterday morning and didn't go running in the 34F/1C temperature. I woke up at 4am to go out, but I looked at the pile of running clothes I had set out the night before and then went back to bed for another hour. However, I told myself I would run in the evening. Luckily, it was a warmer day and I ran in 42F/6C weather at about 9:30pm. It wasn't too bad, but my lungs did get somewhat squeaky. When I got home, it turned into a very mild asthma event. I kept having to cough, so I took a couple puffs of my inhaler and all was fine. I usually only have asthma problems when I physically exert myself while breathing cold air or when I'm around cats that I am allergic to.

I ended up running for 34 minutes and went 2.87 miles/4.63 km. I actually tried to hold back even more than that in order to keep my heart rate down, but I couldn't. I ran to a Podrunner mix of 149bpm called Runnerfunker. Nice stuff. Maybe I'll try 145bpm next time to see if I can slow myself down that way.

It just seems I am much less likely to talk myself out of running in the evening. I think the explanation is akin to Newton's first law of motion. In the evening, I've been up and about, active cooking dinner, getting the kids to bed, etc. In the morning, however, I'm getting up from my warm, cozy bed. It's not even an issue of whether I'm a morning person or not. I know that I'll feel great when I'm done, I just sometimes can't stop myself from crawling back into bed. Maybe if I were getting plenty of sleep it would be easier.

I'm considering joining a gym for the winter to give me a warm place to run this winter. I don't know if I am hard-core enough yet to torture my lungs in the really cold and very windy weather we will most certainly be getting in a month or two. I'm rather afraid of falling on the ice that collects on the sidewalks here when it's cold, too. I know you can get spiky things for your shoes, but it still scares me. For the first 15 minutes or so of running, my toes were cold and somewhat numb despite my lovely Smartwool running socks. I guess that is a drawback of well-ventilated running shoes. That wouldn't be a problem on the indoor treadmill, though.
